Nicolas Salagnac

Medal engraver

WorkshopThe first French medal was created in Lyon more than 500 years ago. It is in that same city that Nicolas Salagnac perpetuates the profession of medal engraver with mastery and talent that led him on an inspired and singular path. Creating premium artefacts : - Medals and derivatives - Trophies - Matrices for embossing paper, cloth and leather - hallmarks - commemorative tablet (effigies in low relief, text, modeled...) - Sculptures He draws : design of drawn models inspired by nature, photos, compositions. He sculpted in low relief : modeling clay, plaster and resins for the production of models for foundry (sand or “cire perdue”) or model for the engraving of medals. He engraves on steel or brass to develop matrices : engraving in "taille directe" process exclusively manual ; engraving by reducing a sculpture in low relief ; engraving assisted by digital control. He creates and mixes materials including glass, wood and metal, creating synergy with other craftsmen. The market looks thin, but the range of orders is wide open. At a time where a world run by financial markets would like to highlight consumerism, and glorify the new technologies to promote standardized and banalized works, Nicolas Salagnac confirms in each of his creations that only man is capable, by skillful and precise actions, to include an intention in the materials and to arouse emotions, extend sensitivity, a vision, a spirit, a soul.

PortraitAt the age of 15, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Nicolas Salagnac entered the Ecole Boulle. He graduated as an engraver. At the age of 25, he is in charge of the engraving workshop of a subsidiary of A. Augis, jeweler since 1830, in Lyon where he makes his weapons. In 2000, the quality of his work is recognized by his peers, he becomes one of the Best Craftsmen of France. At the age of 34, he set up his own business. In 2005, he was awarded the First National Prize of the Société d'Encouragement des Métiers d'Art. In 2008, he created the Medal of Honor of the Villa Médicis for Frédéric Mitterrand, as well as the official medal of the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy (Arthus-Bertrand). In 2013, the Senate retained his creation to create the new medal of its President (ed. Monnaie de Paris). He also engraves "tourist tokens" for the Louvre with the Réunion des musées nationaux and EMC: Mona Lisa, and Victory of Samothrace...
